Aminu Gwarzo resigns

Kano deputy gov, Aminu Gwarzo, resigns

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.

The resignation was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who disclosed that the decision had been formally communicated. However, he declined to provide further details surrounding the circumstances of the exit.

“Yes, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” Shuaibu said.

Although no official reason has been given, Gwarzo’s resignation comes amid rising tensions between his office and the Kano State House of Assembly.

In recent days, the Assembly had levelled a series of allegations against the former deputy governor, including claims of misconduct and concerns related to the discharge of his official duties. Lawmakers were also reportedly considering disciplinary measures, a move observers described as a precursor to a potential political crisis within the state executive.

The development also comes against the backdrop of shifting political dynamics in Kano following Governor Abba Yusuf’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The move has triggered a wave of changes within the state government.

As part of the ongoing restructuring, the governor had earlier removed the Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, in a bid to reposition the civil service for improved efficiency. Similarly, the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi, was relieved of his duties as part of broader efforts to streamline governance.

Political analysts believe Gwarzo’s resignation may not be unconnected to these developments, as the administration seeks to consolidate its position amid the evolving political alignment.

Sources within the Assembly had indicated that the allegations against the deputy governor were still under legislative review before his resignation.

Efforts to get an official response from the Kano State Government were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Gwarzo’s exit is expected to trigger constitutional procedures for the appointment of a new deputy governor, subject to approval by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Observers say the latest development could further reshape Kano’s political structure, especially as the state prepares for future political contests.
