US YouTuber and Twitch streamer IShowSpeed hit 50 million YouTube subscribers on his 21st birthday while livestreaming from Lagos, Nigeria, turning the moment into a roadside celebration watched by millions online.
The influencer, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr, is in Nigeria as part of his African tour, which began on December 29, 2025, and has taken him to about 15 countries across the continent.
His Lagos visit started at Balogun Market on Lagos Island, where large crowds surrounded him, calling out and asking for money. Visibly confused by the exchange, he said:
“What are they saying? It’s like they’re speaking English, but a different kind of English.”
From there, he visited Freedom Park, a former prison turned cultural centre, where he tasted jollof rice for the first time, before heading to the Nike Art Gallery.
Speaking to AFP, local YouTuber Stephen Oluwafisayomi, also known as Stevosky, said IShowSpeed’s visit was helping reshape perceptions of the continent.

“IShowSpeed is showcasing the culture, relationships, cultural differences and food,” he said.
“He wants Americans to see Africa as a place they can also come to.”
At about 6:00 pm local time, IShowSpeed stopped his security convoy to livestream as his channel crossed the 50-million mark. He marked the milestone by shoving his face into a birthday cake as fans cheered.
Another observer, Karim Jari, an 18-year-old student, told AFP that even the less flattering moments in the videos could be useful.
“It can motivate people to help, contribute and try to improve things,” he said.
IShowSpeed was in Dakar a day earlier celebrating Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory.
Named Most Influential Creator of 2025 by Rolling Stone, with Forbes estimating his net worth at about $20 million, IShowSpeed first rose to fame through gaming content before moving into travel livestreams.
His African tour has included a cheetah race in South Africa, a football game with children in Angola, a visit to Kenya’s Maasai community, and the AFCON final in Morocco.
