Senate President Godswill Akpabio has linked the rising insecurity in the country to the coming elections, insisting the situation would improve shortly after the polls.
He made the remark on Tuesday at the official launch of the Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, where he also praised President Bola Tinubu for his performance in office.
According to him, opposition figures who are unhappy with the administration are behind the rising insecurity.
He said immediately after the election, insecurity will no longer be an issue.
He said, “Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”
Akpabio also mocked the opposition, describing it as disorganised, and made a remark directed at Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
He said, “Opposition is in disarray, someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform and they are blaming the ruling party.”
He urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, saying, “Let Nigerians be patient with you, you are doing the right thing.”

He also commended the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, describing him as widely accepted despite public resistance to tax officials.
He said Dr Zacch Adedeji is the first tax-man that Nigerians love, “even in the Bible people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well and Nigerians are happy with him.”
The event was attended by President Bola Tinubu, who commissioned the new complex, as well as Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Also present were Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and several state governors.
The newly inaugurated headquarters is a modern facility consisting of 16 floors across three towers, with capacity to house about 3,000 personnel.
