I will step down for Peter Obi if… — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his readiness to step down for Peter Obi should Obi emerge as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, saying he would yield to any winner of the process.

When asked whether he would step down if Obi proved more popular, Atiku said, “I will step aside for any winner,” adding that Obi was included in that pledge “if he is a contender.”

He went further: “Politics is either you go through democracy or you go through consensus. What is there if he emerges through consensus or electoral processes?”

Atiku also used the occasion to reaffirm that the 2027 race would be his last shot at the presidency. He pushed back on concerns about his age, arguing that Nigeria’s core problem is a failure of leadership, not the age of its leaders, and insisted he has both the experience and the vision the country needs.

The former vice president also advocated for structured leadership training for young Nigerians, saying there is an urgent need to build a new generation of capable leaders.
