Hajiya Umma, El-Rufai’s mother, dies in Egypt

Hajiya Umma, the mother of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has passed away in Egypt where she was reportedly receiving medical treatment.

The news of her death was announced on Friday by Bello El-Rufai, the former governor’s son and the lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, via a statement shared on X.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai who passed away a few hours ago,” Bello wrote.

He described the deceased as the biological mother of his father and expressed gratitude for her life, while also praying for her soul.

“We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. May He bless the souls of the parents we have lost. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers,” he added.

According to reports, Hajiya Umma died in Egypt while undergoing treatment.

Her death comes at a difficult time for the El-Rufai family, as the former governor is currently in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai was arraigned earlier this week alongside one Joel Adoga before a federal high court in Kaduna on charges bordering on alleged money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office. Both defendants pleaded not guilty.

The court adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31.
