Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has accused President Bola Tinubu of planning to remain in power for life if Nigerians don’t stop him in 2027.
El-Rufai made the statement in Abuja during a visit from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, following a clash at an opposition party meeting in Kaduna.
“Honestly, to me, it’s a disgrace… all the years of saying we are pro-democracy, NADECO, it was all pretence, it was all fake,” El-Rufai said. “If we don’t all come together and end this Tinubu administration by 2027, Tinubu will try to be our Paul Biya. He will stay, he will be president for life. All the signs are there.”
El-Rufai was once a strong supporter of Tinubu during the 2023 elections, but their relationship fell apart after his ministerial nomination was blocked in the Senate.

Since then, he has become one of Tinubu’s most vocal critics, often attacking his policies and leadership style.
During the meeting, he urged Atiku to use his experience to mobilise Nigerians. “You are our leader… even President Muhammadu Buhari with his military background never did this.
“And here we are facing full-fledged civilians, but they are worse than any military regime we have ever had,” he added.
Atiku praised El-Rufai for speaking up and agreed that the opposition must unite. “The more reason why we should come together… and make sure that by 2027, we will send them out. And not through anything else but through the ballot box,” Atiku said.
He also condemned the attack on El-Rufai during the ADC event in Kaduna, calling those behind it “APC-sponsored thugs.” Atiku further warned that Tinubu’s administration is “the greatest risk to Nigeria’s democracy since 1999” and urged the opposition to work together to rescue the country.
Meanwhile, political commentator Reno Omokri has taken a different stand, openly declaring that he will support Tinubu in 2027 despite his long-time loyalty to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
“I have unconditional love for former President Jonathan… but in 2027, I will campaign vigorously for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to return as president of Nigeria,” Omokri said during a TV interview.
He even revealed that he named his daughter after Jonathan but insisted that won’t stop him from backing Tinubu’s second term.
