Four of my associates arrested, I may be next – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that he could be arrested at any time by the Federal Government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai, who is now a prominent figure in the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the claim during an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday. He accused the ruling party of mounting pressure on politicians to either defect to the APC or remain loyal to it.

According to him, the political tension has already resulted in the arrest of some of his associates in Kaduna State.

“Four people we worked with in Kaduna have been arrested; so it is only a matter of time before they come for me too,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor has in recent months intensified his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and the APC, the party under which he governed Kaduna State for eight years. He alleged that opposition politicians are being targeted in what he described as an attempt to weaken dissenting voices.

El-Rufai’s comments come amid the arrest and ongoing trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, a development that has heightened political tension within opposition circles.

He also claimed that the APC was using intimidation and arrests to discourage politicians from aligning with emerging opposition platforms ahead of the next general election.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government and the APC had not officially responded to El-Rufai’s claims.
