A major fire outbreak on Wednesday evening razed the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a multi-storey plaza located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, trapping several traders inside the building.
The fire, which reportedly started around 5 pm, affected the commercial plaza largely used as a warehouse and sales centre for clothing materials.
Confirming the incident, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said no casualties had been recorded as of the latest update, while firefighting operations were still ongoing.
According to her, the fire had spread to about the fifth floor of the 25-storey building, after originating from the same level and moving downwards.

Adeseye said the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a distress call at 4:41 pm, with firefighters arriving at the scene by 4:53 pm. Fire crews from the Ebute Elefun and Dolphin fire stations responded promptly, supported by personnel from the Sari Iganmu and Alausa headquarters.
She explained that the affected building is primarily used for warehouse storage and the sale of clothing materials, with a few corporate offices and shops also operating within the premises.
“There has been no record of casualty as firefighting continues,” Adeseye said, adding that members of the public have been advised to stay away from the area to allow emergency and rescue operations to proceed without obstruction.
