A coalition of different social groups on Monday stormed the streets of Ibadan to demand the outright reformation of the entire Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), unit across the country.
The groups were seen moving around in Ibadan with different placards
labeling the SARS as a ruthless and inhumane unit of the police force.
One of the protesters, Tunde Bureemo, who is the Secretary General of
the Youth Enlightenment Empowerment and Self-Sustainability Initiative
(YESSI), a non governmental organisation, disclosed
that himself together with his crew and some other civil organisations
have gathered to express their dissatisfactions with the SARS unit activities in Ibadan and Nigeria at large.
“Our take is simple. We are calling on the Federal Government to curb
the irrational activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, as the
unprofessional and brutality of the unit on innocent youths across
Nigerian is becoming unbearable.
“SARS is expected to protect and not to injure Nigerian youth with
positive vibes. We call for total re-orientation of the force,” he
said.
It would be recalled that the alleged highhandedness, brutality and
extrajudicial execution perpetrated by the Special Anti Robbery Squad
(SARS), orchestrated the #EndSARS protests renting the atmosphere of
Nigeria.
