Edo attack: Obi breaks silence

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the recent attack in Benin City, Edo State, describing it as a worrying sign for Nigeria’s democracy.

The incident occurred at the residence of former APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, where gunmen reportedly opened fire and riddled the gate and several vehicles with bullets.

Speaking in a video circulating online, Obi expressed concern over the security of political figures, saying the attack highlighted the urgent need for better protection for citizens and leaders alike.

“This is where our democracy has reached,” Obi said while pointing to the bullet-riddled gate. The video marked Obi’s first public response to the Edo attack, and many see it as a strong call for action.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, explained that the assailants trailed Obi and other political figures from the ADC Secretariat to Oyegun’s residence before opening fire.

He described the attack as a failed assassination attempt targeting the group. Obi’s statement comes as the nation grapples with rising political violence, reinforcing concerns over the safety of officials and ordinary citizens.

The former presidential candidate’s remarks during the Edo attack show his commitment to speaking out against violence and defending democratic principles.
