Businesswoman and former chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika, has urged married couples to avoid turning money into a tool for control or a source of division in their homes.
Awosika gave the advice while speaking at Celebration Church International (CCI), Ikeja, during the church’s relationship-focused teaching series tagged “Love Code.” A clip from her message has since gained attention online.
In the viral video, she warned couples against using income as a measure of authority in marriage.
“Make the money of no consequence in your home,” she said.
Drawing from her personal experience, Awosika explained that she once earned more than her husband, noting that her business deals and contracts placed her in a stronger financial position at the time.
However, she said she refused to allow the difference in earnings affect the respect and structure of her marriage.
According to her, money should never be used to determine who has the final say in the home.
She recalled that the situation later changed when her husband eventually had a career breakthrough.
“Thirteen years after, he got his field,” she said.
Awosika said the lesson for her was clear — the attitude displayed during difficult seasons often determines the rewards that follow.
“Let me now tell you the real lesson, whatever way I behaved in the thirteen years before, I was about to reap my rewards in the years after and I have reaped them big,” she added.
She concluded by advising couples to treat finances as a shared resource rather than a weapon for competition.
“So when I say to you, do not make money an issue in your home, it’s a tool, use it to achieve the things that you can together. Whether it’s on the side of the man or the woman.”
