Senator Dino Melaye is the one almost everyone has loved to hate and deservedly so because of what some termed as a gibberish approach to issues, but like they say every dog has its day and I make bold to say Melaye his spot on the need to probe, investigate sources of poverty in Nigeria.
Senator Melaye in his usual self, posted a video that has gone viral in questioning why people are always quick to probe the source of wealth of others and not minding to ask questions on why there is so much poverty in the land.
Like Apostle Paul said: If, through a man, death came to the world through sin, then, through another man, life has been restored.
The ratio of wealthy Nigerians is below five per cent and about 65 per cent of that lot are political servants, which means their sources of wealth is derived as a result of their public office, call it loot if you like, but it is what it is.
The ignorance and lackadaisical nature or public office holders in Nigeria to query why there is so much poverty in the land is the sole reason there would continue to be more poverty in the land.
In the days of Chief Obafemi Awolowo where agriculture and not oil was the sole source of building the most civilised an industrious part of Nigeria, it naturally indicates that majority of people in that region in early were into farming business, but what happens the moment oil became the new (not beautiful), bride? The millions of people living on agriculture have one of two options: convert their cash crops to subsistence crops or join in the flirtation with oil.
Agriculture for Nigeria and indeed Africa was the designated industry to help reduce poverty because it was practised with ease by at least one in every family, but since the greedy and intellectually lazy self-serving leaders took over the helm, they repainted a picture of agriculture as a means of livelihood to villagers and less privileged and ironically that includes about 95 per cent of the population, hence, the genesis of a never before poverty generation.
If like Senator Melaye said, a sincere investigation is launched into the source of poverty in Nigeria, they will discover again that a nation that is one of the largest exporters of cocoa in the world has the potentials of empowering over a million people into the trade without a need for a certificate.
They will also find out that a nation that has about eight solid rice-producing states has no business with importing rice, instead, empower more than three million people in the cause.
There is the groundnut pyramid, palm oil plantation, coal, tin, granite and others that have been neglected as the trade of the poor, which could have turned a common man into an employer of labour and a business tycoon, but only government that cares for the growth of the people will only see reasons for this.
If Senator Dino Melaye really wants to rewrite his name in the book of history, he should repeat that video in the Senate and sponsor a bill on these things, then, the once rejected bad boy in the Senate, will have saved millions of people from continuing in the almost certain path of poverty,
