Union membership a choice, not compulsory — Dangote refinery

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has restated that joining any trade union within its facility is strictly voluntary, in line with the Nigerian Constitution and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.

The company made this clarification following what it described as “misleading claims” by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) regarding its labour practices.

Refinery management dismissed allegations that drivers were compelled to sign contracts barring them from union membership, stressing that such claims were unfounded. “It is misplaced to attribute responsibility to Dangote Petroleum Refinery for the personal choices made by drivers regarding union affiliation,” the statement read.

Dangote said it maintains cordial relations with all recognised unions, including NUPENG, and continues to provide facilities such as office space, operational vehicles, and access for dues collection. The company also expressed support for the Ministry of Labour’s mediation efforts, urging NUPENG to embrace dialogue rather than disruption.

“As Nigeria’s largest private-sector employer, we remain committed to global best practices, employee welfare, and workplace safety,” it said.

The refinery also highlighted its investment in 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks, a N720 billion project expected to create over 60,000 direct jobs. Since its commissioning, Dangote said the refinery has helped Nigeria achieve self-sufficiency in fuel supply, stabilise prices, and generate thousands of jobs across related industries.

Rejecting claims of monopoly, the company maintained that its focus remains on supporting the Federal Government’s energy transition roadmap, boosting economic growth, and expanding opportunities for Nigerians.
