A Minna Magistrate’s Court on Thursday ordered the remand of
a 45-year-old businessman, Samuel Okoro, in Minna prison over alleged rape of a
12-year-old girl.

Okoro was arraigned on a one-count charge of having unlawful
sexual intercourse with a minor.

According to the Prosecutor, Mr Alfred Auta, one Hafsat
Abdulmalik of Sabon Gari, Minna reported the matter at the Sabon Gari Police
station on Aug. 11.

Auta quoted the complainant as alleging that the accused, a
resident of Maitumbi area, lured her 12-year-old daughter into his shop and
forcefully had sex with her, at about 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 7.

He said that the offence contravened Section 18 (2) of the
Child Rights Law of Niger State 2010.

Okoro, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor applied for an adjournment to enable the

Magistrate Hamza Muazu, after listening to all sides,
ordered the remand of the accused in prison, and adjourned the case till Aug.
