OpenAI will soon permit adult content on ChatGPT, including erotica, as part of a new policy aimed at “treating adult users like adults,” CEO Sam Altman has announced.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Altman said the update will make ChatGPT more human-like in its interactions “but only if you want it.” He added that the company plans to lift some restrictions in December alongside new age-verification tools.
Altman explained that earlier limits were introduced to protect users from potential mental health risks but noted that the chatbot can now safely offer a wider range of experiences.

The decision follows similar steps by Elon Musk’s xAI, which recently added explicit chatbots to its Grok platform, a move seen as an effort to attract more paying users.
The adult content policy comes amid growing debate about the role of AI companions and their impact on user well-being.
OpenAI previously faced a lawsuit from the parents of a U.S. teenager who took his life after conversations with ChatGPT. The company said it was reviewing the case and expressed sympathy to the family.
