Bayelsa: Hundreds of PDP supporters switch to APC

More than 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party have defected to the All Progressives Congress in Ofoni community, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The defectors, drawn from the hometown of former Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, announced their decision on Thursday in Yenagoa, as PDP supporters switch allegiance to the ruling party.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Christopher Ewhrudjakpo said the community had supported the administration of Governor Douye Diri from the beginning and believed it was necessary to align politically with the government.

He explained that the decision was taken collectively by members of the community, expressing optimism that more people would join the party in the coming weeks as PDP supporters switch to the APC.

Ewhrudjakpo also assured the governor and his deputy of the continued support of the people of Ofoni.

In his welcome address, Vice Chairman of the APC in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Akwakwa B. Akwakwa, described the event as significant, saying it reflected unity and alignment with the vision of Governor Diri, whom he referred to as the leader of the party in the state.

Also speaking, former Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Kemi Prefa, said the party remained open to new members and assured the defectors of equal opportunities within the APC.

Community stakeholders from Sagbama Wards 3 and 4, including Isikuru Joseph, Friday Nigeria, Morris Dovieme, President-General of Ofoni Federated Communities Godspower Ikerewu and leader of Ofoni Women in Politics Ann Siakpere, commended the leadership of Governor Diri and his deputy, Peter Akpe.

Responding, Deputy Governor Akpe welcomed the defectors, describing their move as voluntary and a reflection of the inclusive leadership style of Governor Diri.

He said the defection would strengthen the relationship between the state government and the Ofoni community and encouraged others to join the APC.

The highlight of the event was the formal reception of the defectors by the Chairman of the APC in Sagbama Local Government Area, Arioke Ohwona.
