At least 13 dead, 98 injured as train derails in Mexico

At least 13 people died and 98 others were injured when an Interoceanic Train carrying 250 passengers derailed on Sunday in Oaxaca, Mexico, authorities said.

The derailment occurred near the town of Nizanda. The Mexican Navy confirmed that the train had nine crew members and 241 passengers on board. Of the passengers, 139 were reported safe, while 36 of the injured were receiving medical attention.

President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on X that five of the injured were in critical condition. She added that senior officials had been dispatched to the scene to support the victims’ families.

Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara Cruz offered condolences to those affected and said state authorities were working with federal agencies to provide assistance.

Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos confirmed that Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the accident.

The Interoceanic Train, inaugurated in 2023 as part of the Interoceanic Corridor project, connects the Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast. The project aims to modernize Mexico’s rail network and develop the Isthmus of Tehuantepec into a strategic trade corridor.
