Anambra: Man electrocuted during attempt to steal cable from transformer

A yet-to-be-identified man has died after he was electrocuted while attempting to vandalise electricity equipment belonging to FirstPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited at Ogechukwu Street, Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the suspect reportedly tried to cut cables at a transformer substation.

According to preliminary findings, a loud explosion was heard at the substation shortly after the man tampered with the facility. Residents who rushed to the scene later discovered his lifeless body lying within the premises.

Company officials who arrived to assess the damage confirmed that the explosion resulted from unlawful interference with the power infrastructure, making it another case where a Man electrocuted during attempt to steal cable from transformer was recorded.

In a statement, the Head of Communications of FirstPower, Izunna Okafor, said operatives of the Anambra State Police Command had evacuated the corpse and begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He warned that vandalism and energy theft not only disrupt electricity supply but also pose grave danger to offenders and members of the public.

The company urged residents and community leaders to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around power installations to prevent further incidents in which a Man electrocuted during attempt to steal cable from transformer.
