AI: Prince Harry, Meghan, join call for ban on superintelligent systems

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have joined a global coalition of leaders, scientists, and technology experts calling for a ban on superintelligent AI systems.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are among the signatories of a new statement urging governments and tech companies to stop developing artificial systems that could surpass human intelligence. These systems, often referred to as superintelligent AI, remain theoretical but are already sparking global concern about their safety and impact.

The statement, issued by the Future of Life Institute (FLI), calls for a worldwide pause on advanced AI research until scientists reach a broad consensus that such technology can be developed safely and with strong public oversight. The group warns that moving too quickly could have dangerous and irreversible consequences for humanity.

Other signatories include AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Virgin founder Richard Branson, and former Irish president Mary Robinson, among others.

According to the FLI, unregulated progress in artificial intelligence could lead to severe social and economic risks. These include mass job losses, growing security threats, and the erosion of personal freedoms.

Citing a recent national poll, the institute said nearly three-quarters of Americans support stronger regulation of AI, with most calling for caution before the technology advances further.
