President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has unveiled plans to expand the Dangote Refinery into the world’s largest refinery.
The expansion will raise capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day and is expected to generate about 95,000 skilled jobs at peak construction.
Dangote made the announcement in Lagos during his induction as an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE). He said the project reflects Nigeria’s growing industrial strength and focus on engineering-led development.
“This award is particularly meaningful because it recognises what we are doing in the industry, especially our commitment to employing engineers and skilled professionals. At the peak of construction for this expansion, we expect to have about 95,000 skilled workers on site, and we will continue to grow,” he said.
He added that once completed, the refinery will surpass India’s Jamnagar Refinery to become the largest in the world.

Dangote said the project will rely heavily on Nigerian engineers, technicians, and artisans, creating wide opportunities for local talent.
He also noted that the expansion will strengthen Nigeria’s fuel supply, reduce imports, and save foreign exchange.
“The scale of this expansion reflects our confidence in Nigerian capacity and our belief that Africa has the ability to build world-class infrastructure that meets global standards,” he said.
The refinery, currently at 650,000 barrels per day, is expected to reach 1.4 million barrels per day within three years.
President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Prof. Rahamon Bello, praised Dangote, saying his work continues to inspire engineers and innovators across Africa.
