Indonesia: Train collision leaves 14 dead, 84 injured

At least 14 people have died and 84 others were injured after two trains collided near Jakarta, Indonesian authorities said on Tuesday.

The crash happened late Monday in Bekasi, just outside the capital, involving a commuter train and a long-distance service.

“Based on the latest data as of 08:45 WIB [01:45 GMT], 14 people have been confirmed dead,” state rail operator KAI said in a statement. It added that 84 people were taken to hospital.

Rescue workers are still at the scene, cutting through damaged carriages to reach those trapped.

Mohammad Syafii, head of the national search and rescue agency, said the process is slow and careful.

“We needed to involve personnel with certain skills to perform a measured extrication,” he said. “There are some victims who are alive to this minute and we’re hoping to extricate them, but they’re still pinned by the train material.”

Officials said the commuter train may have stopped after being hit by a vehicle at a level crossing before it was struck by the second train.

“I thought I was going to die,” said Sausan Sarifah, a survivor receiving treatment in hospital. “It all happened so fast… there was no time to get out.”

Authorities said all the victims were on the commuter train, while passengers on the long-distance service were safely evacuated.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, and officials say the death toll could still rise.
