A drunk police officer has been accused of assaulting a man and insulting his girlfriend during a checkpoint stop in Lagos’ Ikeja area.
The incident happened near TFC Opebi on April 15, 2026, and has since gone viral after the victim, identified as Femi, shared his account and videos on X.
Femi said he was stopped by officers while returning from watching football. He claimed trouble started when officers insisted on searching his girlfriend without a female officer present.
In a post tagging @PoliceNG_CRU, @ARISEtv and @dammiedammie35, he wrote:
“Good evening on my way from watching football tonight. I was stopped at a checkpoint in front of TFC opebi… the officer insisted on searching my girlfriend and we requested for a female office to search her”
He alleged the situation escalated after the request was made.
“The police man in question was drunk. And became violent since we requested a female office to conduct the search. The police officer started insulting me, calling my woman a prostitute… I was hit multiple times on the face. My phone taken away from me.”
In videos shared online, a tense exchange is seen between Femi and the officer. Femi is heard objecting to the conduct of the search.
“I’m here for searching and I’m here you cannot shout on my wife and you put your hands on me.”

The clips have sparked mixed reactions online. Some users said the situation should have been handled calmly, while others defended Femi for standing up for his girlfriend.
One user wrote:
“I believe he should have listened to his wife and not pushed things further… Sometimes it’s just better to choose safety first.”
Another said:
“There are so many people with low IQ! A man protected his wife!”
The incident has also renewed calls for police reform, with users demanding body cameras and stricter discipline for misconduct.
One comment read:
“The Nigerian police force needs a reform… Police need to add body cam to their essential gear but we know that will never happen in this country.”
Another added:
“Drunkenness on duty… should be grounds for immediate dismissal.”
Police complaint units have reportedly acknowledged the incident and requested more details for investigation. A hotline (09111111151) was also shared for follow-up.
The video continues to circulate online.
