South Africa:16-year-old girl designs earring that photographs criminals, alerts police

A 16-year-old South African student, Bohlale Mphahlele, is gaining attention after creating a small safety device designed as an earring.

The device can take a photo of an attacker, share the wearer’s location, and send an emergency alert to authorities within seconds.

She developed the idea in response to rising safety concerns, aiming to offer a simple and discreet way for people to protect themselves.

Unlike many security gadgets, the earring looks like a regular accessory. This makes it easier to use in situations where larger or obvious devices may not be practical.

Mphahlele came up with the idea at a young age, with the goal of helping reduce violence in South Africa. Her work has since been recognised at a national science fair.

There are plans to develop the device further and bring it to the market, showing how simple designs can help improve personal safety.
