JUST IN: El-Rufai to remain in custody, Court fixes bail ruling for April 14

A Federal High Court in Kaduna State has fixed April 14, 2026, to rule on the bail application filed by former governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai.

At proceedings on Wednesday, both the defence and prosecution presented their final arguments on the bail request.

Lead counsel to El-Rufai, Iyamu Oyewole, told the court that bail is a constitutional right and said their client has strong ties within the country, making him unlikely to abscond.

The prosecution, however, asked the court to refuse the application, raising concerns that the former governor could influence witnesses or interfere with ongoing investigations if released.

After hearing both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Rilwan Aikawa, adjourned the matter and said a ruling would be delivered on April 14, 2026.

El-Rufai will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until the court decides on his bail application.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is facing legal proceedings over allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office brought against him by the ICPC.

He arrived at the court around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, dressed in a light brown outfit and cap, under tight security.

Security was also increased around the court premises ahead of the sitting, with many observers expecting supporters and political stakeholders to be present.

El-Rufai, through his lawyers, had on Tuesday applied for bail pending the determination of his case.
