Asherkine faces backlash for allegedly staging good deeds in viral video

Nigerian content creator Asher Kine is facing backlash online after a viral video of him helping a restaurant worker sparked claims that the act may have been staged.

The nearly nine-minute clip, posted on Monday, shows Kine meeting a young woman identified as Clare at Adupsy Africana in Lusada, Ogun State.

In the video, he approaches her while she is working at the restaurant. He later treats her to a salon makeover, shopping and a trip to Cape Town.

The post quickly gained attention on X, drawing nearly nine million impressions.

But the video also triggered doubts among some viewers.

Critics pointed to Clare’s Instagram posts, which they said showed a more comfortable lifestyle. Others also shared an Instagram post from about 11 weeks earlier where Kine had commented on her photo, suggesting they may have known each other before the video.

Some users also questioned the restaurant scene.

A user, @bouffa07, wrote:

“In a normal local restaurant, if you pick one girl there, other girls there will hype her up so much, her colleagues will become so loud instantly, you can see it in their faces, they don’t have that relationship with her because she doesn’t work there.”

Another user, @MatekoBenzaX, claimed the woman already had a stable life in Lagos.

“She an interior designer in Lagos, balling from Ikoyi to Lekki steady, I no know when she start to dey do sales girl for Ogun state, abeg nau,” the user wrote.

A third user, @DGBiGG1, also questioned the story.

“Seems scripted … Yes to every question, No boyfriend, Mom said yes to date within a 12 hours of meeting, And parents allowing her to travel to SA without seeing them, knowing well that her job is gone.”

Another commenter, @drpenking, added:

“Today I discovered that everything he posts are staged.”

Kine has since defended the video, insisting the encounter was real.

“I may understand that a bunch of people cannot fathom a young adult living and working in Ogun state, trying to make a way for themselves because she ‘looks too good’ for such a job,” he wrote on X.

He also explained that the video was not filmed in one day.

“I understand that most of my videos span through the progression of a day but this video spanned over a week after our first meet. I’m unsure how it looks like a 48hr livestream.”
