Lindsey Vonn crashed in Friday’s Alpine Skiing World Cup downhill in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, injuring her left knee just a week before the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
The 41-year-old lost control after landing a jump in snowy, low-visibility conditions and got tangled in the safety nets. She was the third skier to crash that day.
Vonn got up after a brief medical check, leaning on her ski poles and keeping weight off her left knee. She skied slowly toward the finish line but stopped to check her injury before being airlifted to a hospital.
“I crashed today in the downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee,” Vonn wrote on Instagram. “This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over.”

The race was canceled after Vonn’s crash due to heavy snowfall and dangerous course conditions. Only two skiers, including teammate Jacqueline Wiles, completed their runs.
Vonn has been the leading downhill skier this season, with two wins and three other podium finishes. She returned last season after a partial right-knee titanium implant and is one of the favorites for the Olympics.
Her first Olympic race, the women’s downhill, is scheduled for Feb. 8. She was also planning to compete in the super-G and team combined event.
The crash highlights the treacherous conditions at Crans-Montana. Romane Miradoli of France, one of the few to finish, said, “You can’t see, and it’s bumpy everywhere.”
