A light moment drew attention at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State, after a newly admitted student proposed to a fellow fresher during the school’s matriculation ceremony.
A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, showed the young man going down on one knee shortly after the official programme ended.
In the clip, he presented a ring to the female student, who was still wearing her matriculation gown, as other students looked on in shock and excitement.
The lady appeared surprised by the gesture but later accepted the proposal, prompting cheers, applause and chants from the crowd gathered outside the venue.

The unexpected proposal briefly shifted attention away from the formal nature of the event, which officially welcomed thousands of new students into the university for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The video has continued to spark reactions online. While some people praised the student’s bold move and described the moment as memorable, others questioned whether it was appropriate to stage such a display during an important academic ceremony.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the University of Benin has not issued any statement on the incident.
Matriculation ceremonies are held annually to formally admit new students and are considered one of the university’s key academic traditions.
