Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed on Friday, causing a nationwide blackout and marking the first system failure of 2026.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation fell to zero megawatts (MW) during the outage.

NISO confirmed that load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dropped to zero MW as of 1 p.m. on Friday.
The affected DisCos included Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola, all of which were without power during the collapse.
