The Federal University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to host Nigeria’s first floating solar power station following the award of a 7-megawatt (MW) floating solar power project to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The project, which will be deployed on the lagoon waters surrounding the university campus, marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy drive and the adoption of innovative clean energy solutions.

An official involved in the project said the floating solar facility is designed to provide UNILAG with a reliable, safe and stable supply of clean electricity, while reducing dependence on conventional power sources and cutting carbon emissions.
Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve power availability on campus, support academic and research activities, and position UNILAG as a pioneer institution in sustainable energy adoption in Nigeria.
The initiative also underscores the growing interest of both public institutions and private investors in renewable energy infrastructure, as Nigeria seeks to diversify its energy mix and promote environmentally friendly power generation solutions.
