Akwa Ibom: Lawmakers to propose 10 years imprisonment for women sleeping with married men

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly is preparing to pass a bill that seeks to criminalise sexual relationships involving married men in the state.

The development was revealed in a Facebook post on Monday by a lawyer, Obiavel Albert Abigo. According to him, the bill, sponsored by the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Inyang, proposes that it will be an offence for any young girl, lady, or woman to engage in a sexual relationship with a married man.

He explained that under the proposed law, any woman found guilty would face a mandatory 10-year prison sentence without the option of a fine.

However, the married man involved would be required to pay a fine of N2 million.

“The bill is expected to be passed into law when it comes up for consideration at the plenary session of the House on Tuesday,” he wrote.
