On Christmas Day, the United States reportedly carried out airstrikes on Nigerian soil, targeting terrorist groups, according to announcements by former President Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth.
While the Nigerian government says it was aware of the operation and frames it as a collaborative effort with “international partners,” the strikes appear to have been conducted without genuine authority or informed consent from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the strikes, stating: “It is deeply troubling that Nigeria lacks the capable and sovereign leadership required to protect its people and its territory.

As a result, the country has been reduced to a bystander while its sovereignty is violated under the direction of U.S. President @realDonaldTrump.”
He further criticized the U.S. action, saying: “Judging by the nature of the confirmed strike on a village in Sokoto, it is clear that the U.S. President neither understands nor genuinely cares about Nigeria or Nigerians.”
Sowore reiterated his position on the need for strong national leadership: “Only true, tested, and informed leadership can protect Nigerians, not imperiled, jaundiced neoconservatives operating from Washington, D.C.”
