Eyo festival: Lagos Island roads to be shut Saturday

The Lagos State Government has announced widespread traffic restrictions on Lagos Island ahead of the Eyo Festival scheduled to hold on Saturday, 27 December 2025.

The travel advisory was issued in a photo statement shared on the state government’s website and official social media platforms. Titled “Travel Advisory – Eyo Festival,” the notice followed the declaration of the festival by the Oba of Lagos, HRM Oba Rilwan Akiolu.

According to the statement, vehicular movement will be restricted or fully closed on major roads across Lagos Island, particularly along designated procession routes, to allow the traditional Eyo masquerades to move safely.

The government said several key access routes linking Lagos Island to the mainland would be temporarily closed, with officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed at diversion points to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Motorists were advised to plan their journeys ahead of time, as the restrictions are expected to cause delays. The state government apologised for any inconvenience the closures may cause, assuring residents that the measures are necessary for public safety during the festival.

The advisory also outlined alternative routes for motorists entering or exiting Lagos Island, urging road users to comply with traffic directives and cooperate with security and traffic officials.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking earlier at the Ijade Opa Eyo ceremony in Marina, expressed delight at the return of the festival, noting that it would showcase Lagos’ rich cultural heritage to the world.
