Kano governor assembles 4,444 Qur’an reciters for prayers against banditry

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has cautioned against turning insecurity into a political issue as he called for collective action to confront the rising threat of banditry in the state.

He gave the warning on Saturday night during a special prayer session at the Government House, where 4,444 Qur’an memorizers (Huffaz) gathered to recite the Holy Qur’an and offer prayers for lasting peace following recent attacks by armed bandits.

The session attracted prominent personalities, including the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, senior government officials, clerics and community leaders.

Governor Yusuf said insecurity affects everyone and urged Nigerians to unite in tackling the menace. “Insecurity does not know politics or party affiliations. This is why everyone, regardless of their leanings, must join hands to fight the monster of banditry. We want to see everybody working together to free Kano,” he said.

He added that his administration has equipped security agencies with operational resources and maintains constant engagement with them to identify and address emerging challenges.

According to him, the government is working round-the-clock with security operatives to protect Kano and its neighbouring communities.

He described the mass prayer session as an important spiritual step and said such efforts should be welcomed by all residents.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to working with traditional institutions, religious leaders and stakeholders to restore peace across the state.

In his remarks, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II praised the state government for combining security measures with infrastructural development. He said better road networks in rural communities would strengthen response to emergencies. “I have seen, while in Faruruwa Community in Shanono Local Government Area, that the government is constructing road networks in rural communities. This will make it easier for security operatives to respond swiftly to distress calls,” the Emir said.

He urged the governor to sustain the development drive by linking all local government areas through functional road networks to enhance movement and improve security coverage.

The Emirate Council, he noted, remains committed to supporting government efforts aimed at restoring Kano’s long-standing reputation as a centre of peace, harmony and commerce.

Islamic scholars, Qur’an reciters and participants from all 44 local government areas attended the session, united in seeking divine intervention and an end to insecurity in the state.
