As the festive season approaches, the Imo and Plateau State Police Commands have imposed a strict ban on the sale, possession, and use of fireworks and firecrackers to ensure public safety.
In Imo State, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Okoye Henry said the directive aims to prevent injuries, fires, and other accidents often associated with uncontrolled pyrotechnics during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The command warned that anyone caught violating the order would be arrested and prosecuted. Officers have been instructed to intensify patrols and enforce the ban rigorously.
Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, urged residents, traders, and event organizers to comply with the directive and report any illegal sale or use of fireworks to the nearest police station. He assured that robust security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property throughout the festive period.
Similarly, the Plateau State Police Command, through its spokesperson SP Alfred Alabo, announced that the ban is “in the interest of public safety and security.”

The command highlighted that fireworks often cause unnecessary panic and disturbances, urging parents, guardians, and religious leaders to caution children and congregations. Anyone found selling, using, or possessing pyrotechnics in violation of the ban will face arrest and prosecution.
Both Commands reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and safe Yuletide, noting that similar measures were successfully enforced during the 2024 festive season to curb accidents and maintain public order.
