General Motors to launch ‘eyes-off’ driving in 2028

General Motors (GM) says it will introduce its new “eyes-off” driving technology by 2028, giving drivers the freedom to take their hands and eyes off the wheel while the car handles the journey.

The automaker revealed the plan during a technology showcase in New York, describing it as a major step toward fully autonomous driving. The feature will first appear in GM’s Cadillac Escalade IQ SUV within three years, alongside a new conversational AI system set to roll out across GM vehicles next year.

“Imagine stepping into your car, pressing a button, and it drives you to the office while you catch up on work or watch your favorite show,” said GM CEO Mary Barra.

The eyes-off driving system is part of GM’s broader effort to reinvent itself as a technology-driven mobility company. Despite setbacks in its electric vehicle business — including a projected $1.6 billion loss this year — the company says it remains committed to innovation and long-term growth.

Competitors such as Tesla, Waymo, and Stellantis already offer self-driving features, but GM believes it can stand out by prioritizing reliability and safety.

“When we launch this, we may be the first to deliver a personally owned self-driving vehicle that truly works,” said Sterling Anderson, GM’s Chief Product Officer and former Tesla executive.

Barra and GM President Mark Reuss emphasized that the company’s focus is not on imitating rivals but on using its engineering and manufacturing strengths to create the next generation of vehicles.

“We’ll continue to invest in technology and R&D,” said Reuss. “We have to be the best — that’s how we win with customers.”

With eyes-off driving at the center of its future strategy, GM aims to position itself as a leader in autonomous technology and redefine how Americans experience mobility.
