President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Danjuma Adamu Ismaila as the new Rector and Chief Executive of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria. The announcement, made on February 19, 2025, marks a significant step toward strengthening leadership at the institution and aligning it with global aviation standards. He takes over from Mr. Joseph Imalighwe, who has been serving in an acting capacity since December 13, 2023.
Dr. Ismaila brings extensive expertise in air transportation management, transport economic policy, and aviation security. He earned a Physics degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1989. Later, he pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Transportation, further complementing his education with specialized training in civil aviation management. Additionally, he holds memberships in the Royal Aeronautical Society in the UK and the Air Transport Research Society. Before this appointment, he lectured at the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, in Katsina State, where he played a crucial role in shaping aviation professionals.
Following the announcement, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, praised President Tinubu’s decision, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership in the aviation sector.
“Dr. Danjuma Ismaila’s experience and academic background make him well-suited for this role. His leadership will contribute significantly to NCAT and the development of aviation education in Nigeria,” he said.
Tajudeen further highlighted that with the aviation industry constantly evolving, strong leadership at NCAT would ensure the institution remains competitive.
Since its establishment in 1964, NCAT has played a pivotal role in training aviation professionals across Africa. The institution continues to supply highly skilled personnel to airlines, regulatory bodies, and other aviation-related sectors. Now, with Dr. Ismaila at the helm, expectations for improvements in curriculum development, infrastructure, and training quality are high. Many in the industry believe his leadership will drive NCAT toward modernization and global recognition.
As the aviation industry rapidly evolves, institutions like NCAT must adapt to new technological advancements and global best practices. Experts believe Dr. Ismaila’s leadership will strengthen academic programs, ensuring graduates meet international standards. Moreover, industry stakeholders expect his expertise to enhance pilot training, air traffic control education, and aviation engineering programs.
His appointment aligns with Tinubu’s broader vision for the transportation sector. The administration has prioritized reforms and capacity-building initiatives to position Nigeria as a center of aviation excellence. By appointing a leader with deep expertise, the government reaffirms its commitment to improving training institutions and maintaining high industry standards.
Looking ahead, Dr. Danjuma Ismaila faces several critical tasks. Modernizing training methods, enhancing industry collaborations, and addressing institutional challenges will be top priorities. Aviation professionals and students anticipate progressive policies that will elevate NCAT’s reputation. With his vast experience and strategic approach, many believe he is the right choice to lead the institution into a new era of growth and excellence.
