A mob killed two suspected “one-chance” robbers in Lugbe, Abuja, on Saturday, February 15, 2025, after they allegedly robbed a passenger.
The attack happened around 4:22 PM along the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Expressway. The suspects, driving a Volkswagen Golf, targeted a woman traveling from Gosa to the city. Witnesses said they forcefully pushed her out of the car after robbing her. She landed on the road, narrowly avoiding another vehicle. Fortunately, Good Samaritans rushed to help and took her to the hospital.
The mob didn’t let the thieves escape. They chased the car and intercepted it near Dunamis Church. One suspect managed to flee, but the crowd caught the remaining two. What followed was a brutal scene of mob justice. The crowd beat the suspects mercilessly. One died on the spot, and the second died shortly after.
This incident highlights the rising problem of one-chance robberies in Abuja. Criminals posing as taxi drivers continue to prey on unsuspecting passengers. Authorities have attempted to curb the menace. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration banned unpainted taxis and buses from operating. However, the attacks persist.
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, has pushed for stricter enforcement. He insists that stronger regulations are necessary to protect commuters and restore public safety.
Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani reacted to the incident. ““I understand the public’s frustration, but mob justice cannot be the solution,” he said, emphasizing the importance of due process.
The FCT Police Command is yet to issue a formal statement. Spokesperson Josephine Adeh acknowledged the incident but provided no further details.
The deaths of the two suspects reflect the deep frustration with Abuja’s security situation. While the fight against crime continues, authorities must find a way to stop these criminals without encouraging mob violence.
