Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has announced a 10% reduction in the number of international students accepted starting in 2025.
According to Trudeau, the restriction is now necessary to safeguard the nation.
“We crack down when bad actors abuse the system and take advantage of students,” the prime minister declared. “Immigration is an advantage for our economy.”
Because of its low birth rate, Canada depends on economic immigration to generate the necessary funds for social spending on services like healthcare and education. This allows Canada to maintain high living standards.
The Canadian government announced a two-year cap on study permits earlier this year in an effort to limit the number of international students it accepts.
The country’s minister of immigration, Marc Miller, unveiled what he described as primary measures to improve program integrity and maintain a sustainable presence among international students entering the country.
Nevertheless, the North American nation has recently modified its liberal immigration policies.
Miller stated that 364,000 undergraduate study permits will be approved in Canada in 2024, a 35 percent decrease from 2023.
According to the minister, the amount would be distributed across all provinces and territories based on population.
Canada announced this month that it would be cutting back on foreign workers and increasing workforce investments, recalibrating its labor market.
Revisions to the temporary foreign worker (TFW) program undid their 2022 expansion, which resulted in a rise in the number of economic migrants entering the nation to fill a million open positions.
