Leading DNA testing facility in Lagos State, Smart DNA, has published its extensive 2024 research on DNA testing trends in Nigeria, which spans July 2023 to June 2024.
The study presents a number of startling conclusions that provide insight into Nigerian family dynamics, economic issues, and society dynamics.
The paternity ambiguity was still significant, according to the study that was made public in Lagos on Sunday.
It states that over one in four males who were tested are not the biological fathers of the children in question, with 27% of paternity tests returning negative results.
Additionally, it revealed a spike in immigration tests, suggesting a strong “Japa” trend.
More Nigerians are looking for chances abroad, and the survey found that the number of DNA tests performed for immigration purposes has increased significantly—more than any other test type.
According to the trend, an increasing number of parents who hold two citizenships were completing the necessary papers for their kids to immigrate.
Lagos led the region in terms of regional domination, which was reflected in economic inequality, according to the survey.
Most DNA testing (73.1%) were performed in Lagos, with the mainland conducting the majority (67.5%) and the island conducting the majority (32.5%) of the tests.
The research states that the primary reason for DNA testing is peace of mind, as evidenced by the fact that 85.1 percent of tests were ordered for this purpose as opposed to legal ones.
