31-year-old Onumonu ends career as pro footballer

Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu has announced her retirement from professional football, bringing to an end a career that spanned more than a decade in the United States, France, and Nigeria.

The 31-year-old announced her decision on Instagram on Saturday, calling it the “natural conclusion” of a journey that began at age eight.

Onumonu played professionally in the U.S. with Boston Breakers, Portland Thorns, Reign FC, Utah Royals, and NJ/NY Gotham FC before moving to France with Montpellier HSC.

She switched allegiance from the U.S. to Nigeria in 2021 and represented the Super Falcons at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympics in Paris, and the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria lifted a record 10th title.

Looking back, Onumonu said her proudest moments included lifting an NWSL championship and playing for Nigeria on the world stage. She stressed that retirement does not mark an end to her involvement in football.

“This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning,” she said, noting she is excited to explore opportunities off the pitch while carrying forward lessons from her playing career.
