The Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup dream ends in heartbreak as Nigeria is eliminated by DR Congo after a 1–1 draw and 4–3 penalty shootout loss.

2026 World Cup: Super Eagles secure spot in qualifiers final

The Super Eagles of Nigeria advanced to the final stage of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after a dramatic 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon on Wednesday night.

After a tense first half with few clear chances, Nigeria broke the deadlock late in the second half through forward Adams, who calmly converted to put the Eagles ahead. Gabon, however, equalized through Mario Lemina about 15 minutes later to force the match into extra time after a 1–1 draw in regulation.

Substitute Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead in the 98th minute, finishing off a well-placed assist from Wilfred Ndidi to score his first-ever goal for the national team.

Star striker Victor Osimhen, who had missed a clear chance in the closing moments of normal time, made amends with two quick goals in the 102nd and 110th minutes, sealing the victory and taking his international tally to 30 goals. The brace leaves him just seven goals shy of breaking Rashidi Yekini’s all-time scoring record for Nigeria.

Young defender Benjamin Fredrick, 20, also stood out with a composed and disciplined performance, making key interventions that frustrated Gabon’s attempts to find a way back.

The Super Eagles will now face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo in the qualifiers final. The victor will earn a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
